Lesvos

It is the third biggest island in Greece, after Crete and Evia, with an area of 1,630sq. km and a coastline of 370km. It has 90,000 residents. A few miles away from the SW coast of Turkey, it is located almost at the entrance of Adramytios Gulf. It belongs to the Northern Aegean islands. It is famous for two products, ouzo and olive oil.

Lesvos is filled with many streams, has rich flora and fauna, famous olives groves, the mild Mediterranean climate, charming traditional villages and remarkable examples of industrial architecture. It is also known for the unique fossilized forest covering the Sigri-Eressos-Antissa area. It has been designated as a preserved natural monument since 1985.

It is the homeland of the famous ancient poets Sappho and Alkaios. The contribution of Lesvos to the arts and letters has been invaluable. Eminent personalities such as Arion, Terpandos, Theophrastos, Pittakos Mitilineos, Theophilos, Il. Venezis, Str. Myrivilis, Arg. Eftaliotis (Kleanthis Michailidis), G. Iakovidis and the plastic artist Str. Elefteriadis were born here. Additionally, the Nobel prizewinning poet Odysseas Elytis was of Lesvian descent.

Olive oil

As the island is situated in the Aegean sea, its unique location allows it to receive sunshine about two-thirds of the year, making it one of the sunniest islands in the Aegean Sea. This climate gives the olive tree, which covers 40% of the island, about 11 million trees, an environment to thrive in.

The average annual production of olive oil approximately 20,000 tons. The 11 million trees correspond to the 90,000 inhabitants, which translates to roughly 130 olive trees per inhabitant, which is far higher ratio than can be found in any other place in the world. In the rest of Greece, the ratio is 9.5 per person.

Another feature that contributes to the high quality of the olive oil of Lesvos is the large number of modern oil presses and small-scale farmers. These two factors mean that the fruit is crushed immediately.
